Melbourne seasons four in one day

What can I say about the Temperature in Melbourne and its weather, one thing is for sure it’s certainly changeable and unpredictable. Although if you know it’s unpredictable and you know it will change does that make it predictable??? Generally, if you add 10 degrees C to the temperatures you get in the UK for any given season you won’t go far wrong for a general ballpark figure of the same Melbourne seasons. For example, a UK summer range could be 15/20 to 25/30 whereas a Melbourne range is 25/30 to 35/40. But remember that’s comparing seasons and not months so there won’t be a 10 degree difference in February…although last week it was actually 17 degrees in the UK and about 27/30 in Melbourne so what do I know.

Melbourne Seasons

  • Summer: December to February
  • Autumn: March to May
  • Winter: June to August
  • Spring: September to November

Melbourne four seasons in one day

There is a reason Melbourne gets a reputation for four seasons in one day because it literally can change that quickly. You will often get 40+ one day and then 18 the next. But you also get 40+ one morning and 18 in the afternoon. One day this year, think it was around the Melbourne open time it dropped 20+ degrees in about 10/15mins, seems unbelievable but that just what happens here.

In summer when it’s hot it is hot, almost like stepping into an oven as the heat is so dry, but you really don’t get too many of these days even in summer as you also get coolish days and in between days throughout the summer months.

I guess the average would be around 25 degrees Celsius but you actually don’t get many days where is 25 its either higher or lower. Autumn is usually more stable with warm days but not that hot.

Winter in Melbourne is the one that always confuses people, its actually cold, rains a bit and is very much like a UK winter, and although the average is still probably about 10 degrees warmer, say mid-teens the range is probably actually about the same and there is days when the temperature goes below 10 degrees and can even drop below zero overnight.

It can also snow on the hills in outskirts and a 1.5 hour drive you can be on the ski slopes of the mountains so not really the typical picture most people have when they think of weather in Australia.

So Melbourne definitely gets 4 distinct seasons which I actually do like, although I think in an ideal world I would probably live in Brisbane over winter where they seem to get nice mid 20’s temperatures (although with a few very extreme storms) then move back to Melbourne when it gets too hot.

Melbourne weather conclusion

So in conclusion, before the UK Summer of 2018 the weather throughout the year in Melbourne is definitely better than the UK but during that 2018 summer, it might not actually have had any more what I call perfect days where it is predictably going to be 25ish degrees, with no wind or rain. Let’s see what 2019 has in store for the UK, I am planning a trip back so hopefully, it will be a good one again.
