6 things to do when you first get to Australia

Here is the list of things you need to do when you first get to Australia.

Get a bank account

Technically you can do this before you get to Australia but if you haven’t this is probably the first think you need to do so open an everyday bank account. If you don’t have a regular income yet just open one with NAB as they do not charge a fee even if you don’t pay money in. If you have a wage feel free to do a bit more research into what bank to open as they are all free if you pay in so much each month.

Register for Medicare (if on PR visa)

Find your local Medicare centre and register, you will need to take identification, visa and provide them with your bank details

Appy for a TFN number

The TFN number is the tax file number and you will need this to work in Australia but as long as you have applied you can start a job as you get a temporary number which will mean you pay more tax until you have your number sorted. Anyway its very easy to apply for and only took 6 days for my TFN to arrive. See here for full instruction on how to apply for it and also how to then apply for an ATO and mygov.com.au account

Get  Ambulance insurance

You need to Decide if you want ambulance insurance but one thing you should know is that you are not covered for Ambulance usage automatically or as part of Medicare. Therefore if you need to use an Ambulance and you don’t have cover you will be charged and it can cost a lot of money. I have heard that it could be thousands of dollars just to get picked up and taken to the hospital. Although I hope you never need it I  would definitely consider getting cover straight away.

Signed for centerlink via your MYGOV account

If you are on a permanent residency visa and have children that going to need to got to a nursery, child care, daycare or what ever you are calling it at the moment you need to apply for a centerline account. This is because you generally pay a lot for daycare but get a rebate back from the government based on your eaning, average earnings get about a 50% rebate. When claiming just complete a claim for all types of benefit and see what you qualify for.

Start looking for somewhere to live

I assume you have booked somewhere to stay for at least a few nights/weeks but this time will pass quickly and depending on where you want to live it can take quite a while to get your bearings and find somewhere you want to live more permanently. The first thing you need to do is download the realestate app(www.realestate.com.au), this is by far the most dominate app (rightmove.co.uk equivalent). Domain.com.au is pretty good too.
